A Review on Contact and Collision Methods for Multi-Body Hydrodynamic Problems in Complex Flows

Modeling and direct numerical simulation of particle-laden flows have a tremendous variety applications in science engineering across vast spectrum scales from pollution dispersion the atmosphere, to fluidization combustion process, aerosol deposition spray medication, along with many others. Due their strongly nonlinear multiscale nature, above complex phenomena still raise very steep challenge most computational methods. In this review, we provide comprehensive coverage multibody hydrodynamic (MBH) problems focusing on particulate suspensions fluidic systems that been simulated using hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian flow models. Among these models, Immersed Boundary-Lattice Boltzmann Method (IB-LBM) provides mathematically simple computationally-efficient algorithms for solid-fluid interactions MBH simulations. This paper elaborates mathematical framework, applicability, limitations various 'simple complex' representations close-contact interparticle collision methods, including short-range inter-particle particle-wall steric interactions, spring lubrication forces, normal oblique collisions, mesoscale molecular models deformable particle collisions based hard-sphere soft-sphere simulate settling or nonuniform particles different geometric shapes sizes diverse systems.
